London’s Almeida Theatre has announced that, as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, the award-winning actor Jonathan Pryce will be starring in its 2012 production of King Lear. It will be the first time Pryce has performed on stage since 2010’s The Caretaker, which enjoyed fantastic reviews during its stints at the Liverpool Everyman and Trafalgar Studios.
Considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy, King Lear will be directed by the Almeida’s artistic director, Michael Attenborough. Pryce’s Shakespeare credentials – he won an Olivier in 1980 for his starring role in Hamlet – combined with the intimacy of the Almeida means this product is bound to be very popular with London’s theatre-goers.
