Running since 1946, this film festival – and launch pad to many luminous careers – is the third oldest after Cannes and Venice. Its piece de resistance is the stunning Piazza Grande which houses audiences of 8,000 for huge outdoor screenings of new films. The judging panel awards Leopards of Honour to directors, while the top prize is the Golden Leopard for the competition's winning movie.
