Matilda the Musical
Cambridge Theatre
Until Sunday 21 October
A stage adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, Matilda the Musical has been a huge success both with critics and theatregoers. The Royal Shakespeare Company joined forces with the multi-award winning musical comedian Tim Minchin to create this spirited production. Minchin and scriptwriter Dennis Kelly strike an assured balance between cartoonish, light-hearted comedy and darkly-edged satire to create a rebellious and witty show.
The adult cast features established talent such as comedian Paul Kaye, but the real delight is the charm and vocal range of the three young actresses who play Matilda.
Legally Blonde
Savoy Theatre
Until Saturday 7 April
This musical version of the hit film doesn’t take itself seriously, but the critics certainly do. Legally Blonde won three Olivier Awards in 2011, including Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical for star Sheridan Smith.
Homecoming queen Elle Woods’ boyfriend dumps her for someone more serious, so she enrols at Harvard Law School to prove her academic nous is as unshakeable as her fashion sense. ‘This is frivolous fun that’s ideal for a girl’s night out,’ comments Emma.
Now with Carly Stenson in the lead role, the show will close in the West End this spring, so call us soon if you want to see it.
