Neil Docking, lifestyle concierge’s in-house golf pro, says:
‘If you’re after a classic, traditional European country club, then Cannes Mougins is the place for you. Opened in 1923, it was redesigned by Peter Allis and David Thomas in 1977. It’s a former host of the Cannes Open and was the only private members’ club on the French Riviera between 1980 and 1994. Former winners of the Tour event include Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros and Ian Woosnam.
‘The clubhouse is spacious, with huge windows overlooking the 18th hole. The course is always in great condition and the small greens are not quite as difficult as they look. The two opening holes are tough but it eases up after this. The second is a long par three with a big bailout area which you shouldn’t be ashamed to use. There are a number of holes where you can’t see the green from the tee, so book at least two rounds or you will be guessing at your own peril. It’s also the kind of course where you finish playing and want to go straight back out again.
‘Although everything about the club looks and feels like a members-only country club, you are made to feel very welcome by the staff and can play as a non-member. If you’re in the Côte d’Azur, I would highly recommend playing here.’
