Golf is only one of the pleasures Hawaii has to offer. There are more than 70 courses on the islands; we’ve picked a few for your next trip that we feel deserve a special mention.
Our Travel team can take care of flights and accommodation for any of these resorts, while one of our golf specialists can brief you on the course in advance so that you’re prepared for that tricky 11th hole. Call us to book your next golfing holiday.
O’ahu
‘Ko’olau golf course cost millions to build in a tropical rainforest in the Ko’olau mountains, but the desired effect was achieved – the views are fantastic,’ comments Mark Bednarcyk, a Hawaiian golf pro. ‘However, because of the location it tends to rain a lot, so take wet weather gear.’
The Palmer course at Turtle Bay is another great place to play on O’ahu. It hosts a PGA Tour seniors event, and the course is normally in really good condition.
Mid Pacific is the course of choice in the area. The course is brilliant and it’s somewhere you need to play in order to fully understand the beauty of the island.
‘Waialae is where the PGA Tour’s Sony Open takes place, but it’s overrated,’ says Mark.
Maui
Kapalua has the Bay and Plantation courses, where the PGA Tour’s opening tournament is held. They are both great tracks and well worth playing. While there, try playing Wailea Emerald and Old Blue, which are also very solid courses.
Kauai
Poipu Bay is an awesome track, but when in Kauai you should play the public course, Wailua. All the pros in Hawaii play there when they go to Kauai – it’s a must.
Big Island of Hawaii
Waikoloa Village golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The 6791-yard, par-72 course offers a blend of natural surroundings with all the features one expects from the famous golf architect. A great feature is the lava rocks lining the fairways.
Makalei Golf Club is known as the course where the locals play. Don’t let that lead you to believe it’s anything less than a wonderful course. There are views of the ocean everywhere; the most spectacular is at the 15th, from which you can see Haleakala mountain across the channel.
There are many ways to enjoy the islands of Hawaii. You can take a cruise and play golf in each port, go on honeymoon (when it would be best to rent clubs) or book a getaway during the UK winter.
