Our restaurant expert Dean Dalton says: 'When you walk into J Sheekey you're instantly reminded of a gentlemen's club – the subdued colours and comfortable, if not luxurious, fittings make members feel they're in good hands. That atmosphere is reflected in the service. Professional and no-nonsense are the bywords of the J Sheekey staff, who busy themselves in the hectic restaurant with quiet efficiency.
'Originally set up as an oyster bar in 1869, the establishment grew thanks to the patronage of actors and directors working the local theatres – some of whom are still commemorated in the parade of photographs that line the walls. Egon Ronay said of J Sheekey: ‘You can almost smell the grease paint.'
'The fish is excellent – it's not quite the finest in London, but good quality regulars cooked and served in a no-frills way delight diners. Our members who go there often go back – they like the straight-down-the-line classics, such as fresh Dover sole, served by nearly-invisible staff in a down-to-earth manner. The patrons of J Sheekey don't want the theatrics of nouvelle cuisine or the novelty of bizarre culinary creations. The separate vegetarian and vegan menu has also earned praise.
'The restaurant's position in the West End makes the it a lively venue at most times, with the regular procession of London life right outside its mirrored windows. The convivial atmosphere and welcoming looks of the place keep members coming back time and again.'
