Wedding season: guide for guests

Wedding season: guide for guests

Outfit? Gift? Travel arrangements? Best man's speech? Prepare to be a wedding guest, with our help

Spring is upon us, and for many members that means the start of the wedding season. We can help couples arrange photographers, ice sculptures and bands for the Big Day, but we're also here for guests. Whether you're only going to one wedding this year or have a social calendar that's packed with celebrations throughout the UK (and beyond), we're here to help.

Best man's speech

The best man's speech can be a nerve-wracking experience for those who aren't used to public speaking. Comedy expert Sophie Johnson says: 'Don't panic. Speak clearly. Don't mumble. You're not going to get heckled so relax. Remember that you have the best kind of audience – everyone is happy because they're at a wedding, possibly a bit drunk, and they are really excited to hear the speech. You've got them in the palm of your hand before you've even started. Just make sure you're prepared – don't write it the night before.'

The most important thing, according to Sophie, is to judge your audience. ‘Make sure that even aunts and uncles can understand the jokes – don't just pitch them at people who were at uni with the groom or on the stag do. And don't mention anything that the bride doesn't already know about and would be unhappy to hear – even if it is hilarious.'

We can book members on to speech writing, public speaking and comedy courses to help them prepare – call us to arrange.

Planes, trains and luxury spas

Whether you're going to a wedding in Scotland or Singapore, our travel team can put together bespoke itineraries that will include everything from cabs to the airport to tips on what to see in the area after the Big Day. ‘We can find B&Bs, boutique guest houses, luxury spa hotels – just let us know what your requirements are,' says travel specialist Liz Beresford. ‘Even if the wedding is taking place in the middle of nowhere, we'll find out what options are available, send you a list and then book the venue of your choice.'

Members who go to weddings that are further afield often choose to extend their stay and make a holiday of the trip. Liz says: ‘We can help with suggestions on what to do in the local area, make restaurant reservations or organise day trips.'

We can also help with childcare if you're invited to the wedding but your kids aren't. Our team can advise on family-friendly hotels with their own childcare facilities, or source reliable and qualified babysitters throughout the UK.

Wedding outfits

There are few rules for guests when it comes to weddings: all you have to do is turn up on time, enjoy yourself and make sure you're dressed for the occasion. ‘Some weddings are more formal than others and the invitation will include details of any specific dress codes, but otherwise you should choose your outfit depending on the time of year and the type of ceremony,' says Hannah Rech, one of our shopping and beauty specialists. ‘If it's a summer daytime wedding in a hot climate then be careful with fabrics like silk which will show up sweat really easily. Choosing a sleeveless dress with a jacket that you can take off after the ceremony will work well. If it's an evening affair at a country manor then you've got a chance to showcase that fantastically glamorous dress that's been waiting for a special occasion.'

Our team can hire tuxedos and kilts for men, source hats, handbags and accessories, as well as find local salons on the day for blow drys and last-minute manicures. We can help you plan your outfit beforehand and make sure you look great – without upstaging the bride of course.

Gifts

If the couple haven't got a wedding list and you're struggling for inspiration, give us a call. Our team can provide ideas on gifts and source everything from vintage wine to modern art. ‘We can find the perfect item to suit the couple,' says Hannah. ‘Tell us about their interests and we'll do the rest.' Our team can also arrange experience gifts, such as horse riding days, cookery courses or hot-air balloon flights.

Last-minute help (for the happy couple too)

We're experts at emergencies. If the airline has lost your dress, the band have called in sick or the flowers have wilted before the ceremony has even begun, call us and our experts will do everything they can to avert disaster. Lifestyle concierge is open 24 hours a day and our lifestyle managers speak more than 20 different languages. We have trusted suppliers and contacts all over the world, so whether you need tailors, florists or a violin quartet, we can help.
